PROPOSAL TITLE

The instructional uses of live-feed web cameras: Collaborating with Memphis Zoo, university faculty, K-12 teachers and students.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Through collaborations, this project’s aim is to explore in what ways live-feed web cameras can be harnessed for instructional purposes. While situating this project in a science education context, we will attempt to engage university students as pre-service teachers, and subsequently, their students in field experiences and observations that require sustained reasoning and encourage multiple representations of knowledge and other technology tools. This will also be the case for the Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools in-service teachers who will be participating. We also hope extend the context beyond a science education setting for university faculty in order to suggest other uses for live-feed web cameras in elementary, secondary and university contexts.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

    1. Implement a live-feed web camera with an animal exhibit at Memphis Zoo.
    2. Develop lesson plans with Science education faculty, pre-service and in-service teachers that integrate live-feed web cameras into K-12 classrooms.
    3. Provide forums for university faculty to discuss pedagogical uses of live-feed web cameras in primary, secondary and tertiary classrooms.
    4. Document the implementation, integration and collective ideas produced as a result of this project.
