The technology behind the Zoocam

The Zoocam is a Canon VB-C10R, where the R means reversed, because the camera is mounted upside down in a protective housing. It distributes live video on the Internet up to 30 frames per second (fps). The Zoocam uses Motion-JPEG (MPEG) to compress the video stream for distribution. Up to 20 users can log into the camera at one time; however, only one can be in control of the camera at a time.

The camera has a 16x zoom lens with pan and tilt capabilities. It can pan left and right up to 340 degrees (170 degrees each way) and can tilt up and down 100 degrees (10 degrees up and 90 degrees down).

The Zoocam's unique capability is that it is equipped with a built-in web server and through FTP can serve web pages as well as video. The only wires exiting the camera are Ethernet and power. With remote management, it's pretty easy to make changes to the camera's settings.
